Information about the college
Practicum in Portfolio Management
The Practicum in Portfolio Management is a hands-on finance course provided through
the Fenimore & Fisher College of Business at Oral Roberts University.
The course is offered only to graduate-level students, and enrollment is based on
students' qualifications and success in pre-requisite courses.
In this course, students act as the fund managers, utilizing state-of-the-art investment
tools such as Bloomberg and FactSet to analyze market trends and choose stocks to
add to the portfolio.
Student Managed Investment Fund
The student-managed investment fund (SMIF) offers students the ability to invest money
and make real-time trades in the stock market. Students evaluate economic and industry
data to build a stock portfolio using the Russell 1000 as a benchmark.
Risk and Return Objectives
The goal of the Student Managed Investment Fund (SMIF) is to achieve a long-term risk-adjusted
performance superior to that of the Russell 1000 stock index benchmark. Long-term
returns are calculated on a 3-5 year basis and include the effect of dividends.
The majority of the fund is comprised of equities which are members of the Russell
1000. The fund has a high risk tolerance consistent with equity markets and the Russell
1000 benchmark.
Our Team
The SMIF Portfolio Managers are responsible for maintaining records of the fund, and
they generate a final consolidated report at the end of each semester to the Advisory
Committee and Oversight Committee.
Dr. Jonathan Wiley
Serving as both Professor and Chair of the Advisory Committee, Dr. Jonathan Wiley
facilitates conversations between the student fund managers and industry experts.
Dr. Wiley earned his Ph.D. in Finance from Oklahoma State University.
