Exceptional Opportunities for Students with Extraordinary Intellectual Talents
As a student with exceptional gifts, you'll enjoy exceptional opportunities to hone those talents on the ORU campus. Your course of study is tailored to your specific career and mission goals to provide maximum value. There are different requirements for the Honors Program within each school and department, but the goal is always to enhance your learning opportunities, not to add more work. Right from the start, you will be made aware of the possibilities open to you including pursuit of such renowned scholarships as Rhodes, Fulbright and Truman and in-depth study abroad opportunities.
Honors students also receive:
- Increased one-on-one exposure to professors often including the opportunity to participate in scholarly research projects
- Exposure to professional conferences and national events
- Involvement in inviting visiting speakers to campus
- Exclusive interdisciplinary Fellows seminars combining two diverse subjects taught by two professors in a richer presentation of material (for example biology and English)
- More enriching general education courses
- Greater consideration for prestigious scholarships and study abroad opportunities
ORU's Honors Program is a participating member of the National Collegiate Honors Council.
Requirements
As an Honors student, you may come to ORU with up to 30 Advanced Placement credits, allowing you to begin college as a sophomore or second-semester freshman.
Scholars are selected and invited to the program upon admission if they have a 4.0 high school GPA.
All invited students will be Honors Program Scholars. While in the Program, students will need to keep a 3.5 GPA, participate in 2 or more Honors Program social events per year, and submit a renewal form each winter. To graduate from the Honors Program as a Scholar, students will need to successfully take 2 of the HONR seminars.
Every Scholar has the opportunity to advance to a Fellow status if they complete 4 of the HONR seminars. This gives students the option to achieve another level of distinction at graduation. Regardless of a students status as a Fellow or Scholar, all Honors Program students must have a total of 18 honors credits and a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or higher to graduate from the Program.
