Getting Your Driver’s License as an International Student

If you plan to drive while in the U.S., you’ll need to apply for and receive a valid driver’s license. Driving without one is illegal, so be sure to visit your local Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) to get started.

Steps to Apply for a Driver’s License
  • Wait 10 days after arriving in the U.S. to ensure your Form I-94 “Arrival/Departure Record” is updated in government systems.
  • Obtain your Social Security number (SSN).
  • Visit the DMV with the required documents to submit your application.

The DMV may verify your nonimmigrant student status through the Systematic Alien Verification for Entitlements (SAVE) Program to determine your eligibility for a driver’s license. Visit their website to learn more.

Required Documentation

When applying for a driver’s license at your local DMV, bring original copies of the following:

  • All signed versions of your Form I-20
  • A valid passport and most recent student visa (Visa-exempt countries like Canada or Bermuda do not require a visa)
  • Proof of residence (Check your local DMV’s website for specific requirements)
  • A SSN card or Form SSA-L676 (“Refusal to Process SSN Application”)
  • For students on Optional Practical Training (OPT): Form I-766 (“Employment Authorization Document”)

Please note: Visit a DMV office, not a tag agency, to apply for a driver’s license. You must also pass a written exam and a driving test to obtain your license. You can study for the written exam here.

After passing the required exams, you will receive a temporary driver’s license while waiting for your official one to arrive by mail. It is common for non-residents to be issued temporary licenses, and the final license may take several weeks to be delivered.
